Neutrinos from tidal disruption events | Nature Astronomy

Delayed radio flares from a tidal disruption event | Nature Astronomy
Description
Radio observations of tidal disruption events (TDEs)—when a star is tidally disrupted by a supermassive black hole (SMBH)—provide a unique laboratory for studying outflows in the vicinity of SMBHs and their connection to accretion onto the supermassive black hole. Radio emission has been detected in only a handful of TDEs so far. Here we report the detection of delayed radio flares from an optically discovered TDE. Our prompt radio observations of the TDE ASASSN-15oi showed no radio emission until the detection of a flare six months later, followed by a second and brighter flare years later. We find that the standard scenario, in which an outflow is launched briefly after the stellar disruption, is unable to explain the combined temporal and spectral properties of the delayed flare. We suggest that the flare is due to the delayed ejection of an outflow, perhaps following a transition in accretion states. Our discovery motivates observations of TDEs at various timescales and highlights a need for new models. A delayed radio flare six months after an optically discovered tidal disruption event, followed by a second and brighter flare, years later, may potentially be due to the delayed ejection of an outflow following a transition in accretion states.#Astronautics

A tidal disruption event coincident with a high-energy neutrino | Nature Astronomy
Description
Cosmic neutrinos provide a unique window into the otherwise hidden mechanism of particle acceleration in astrophysical objects. The IceCube Collaboration recently reported the likely association of one high-energy neutrino with a flare from the relativistic jet of an active galaxy pointed towards the Earth. However a combined analysis of many similar active galaxies revealed no excess from the broader population, leaving the vast majority of the cosmic neutrino flux unexplained. Here we present the likely association of a radio-emitting tidal disruption event, AT2019dsg, with a second high-energy neutrino. AT2019dsg was identified as part of our systematic search for optical counterparts to high-energy neutrinos with the Zwicky Transient Facility. The probability of finding any coincident radio-emitting tidal disruption event by chance is 0.5%, while the probability of finding one as bright in bolometric energy flux as AT2019dsg is 0.2%. Our electromagnetic observations can be explained through a multizone model, with radio analysis revealing a central engine, embedded in a UV photosphere, that powers an extended synchrotron-emitting outflow. This provides an ideal site for petaelectronvolt neutrino production. Assuming that the association is genuine, our observations suggest that tidal disruption events with mildly relativistic outflows contribute to the cosmic neutrino flux. The tidal disruption event AT2019dsg is probably associated with a high-energy neutrino, suggesting that such events can contribute to the cosmic neutrino flux. The electromagnetic emission is explained in terms of a central engine, a photosphere and an extended synchrotron-emitting outflow.#Astronautics

Orbital exenteration for conjunctival melanoma: comparison of long-term outcome between individualised and conventional techniques | Eye
Description
Growing evidence supports an individualised approach rather than radical surgery for conjunctival melanoma (CM). This study aimed to compare the long-term outcome between individualised and conventional exenteration techniques. Our study retrospectively recruited advanced CM (clinical T3 stage) patients treated with individualised (13 cases) or conventional (18 cases) exenteration from June 2014 to April 2019. The individualised approach preserved at least three quadrants of the orbit, and the conventional procedures removed at least one third of the orbital tissues. The medical records were collected and analyzed during April 2020, including demographics, tumour characteristics, surgical details, postoperative rehabilitation and tumour-related prognosis. The tumour basal diameter was statistically (P = 0.011) larger in the conventional group (23.3 ± 7.6 mm) than in the individualised group (15.4 ± 6.3 mm). More tissues were preserved in the individualised group, resulting in a shorter duration of wound healing (2.1 ± 0.6 vs. 3.6 ± 2.0 weeks, P = 0.018) and less incidence of hollow appearance (15% vs. 72%, P = 0.003) than the conventional group. After follow-up for 39.3 ± 17.3 months, a comparison of survival curves showed no significant differences (P = 0.638) between the two groups. The 1- and 2-year overall survival rates were estimated as 100% and 80.0% in the individualised group, and 93.8% and 72.5% in the conventional group, respectively. Low or mixed pigmentation was identified as the risk factor for tumour-related mortality based on multivariate regression analysis. The individualised approach to exenteration offers improved aesthetic results while still maximises the curable chance for advanced CM.#Astronautics
