Description Enhancing lithium-ion battery technology in terms of specific capacity and charging time is key for the advancement of the electrification of transportation. Particularly for fast charging, inhomogeneous deposition of metallic lithium, for example on commercial graphite or metallic lithium anodes, leads to cell degradation and safety issues. To understand the underlying mechanisms and develop counter-measures, non-invasive online detection techniques providing satisfactory time resolution are crucial. Here, we demonstrate in operando pulse electron paramagnetic resonance to observe transient processes during pulsed fast charging in cells with metallic lithium anodes. Sampling timescales of 100 ms enable real-time monitoring of the formation and evolution of porous lithium during and after charging pulses. It was observed that the generated morphology continued to evolve after the end of a charging pulse, whereby surface features were fusing with a time constant that was slower than their formation. Knowing the morphology of lithium anodes is important for designing batteries with long service life. Here, pulse electron paramagnetic resonance is used to monitor pulsed plating of lithium on a timescale of 100 ms, revealing transient morphology changes after the charging pulse ended.

Description The demand for energy harvesting technologies has been increasing over the years that can be attributed to its significance to low power applications. One of the key problems associated with the available vibration-based harvester is the maximum peak power can only be achieved when the device frequency matches the source frequency to generate low usable power. Therefore, in this study, a magnetically-tunable hybrid piezoelectric-triboelectric energy harvester (MT-HPTEH) was designed and optimised. Four key design factors: mass placement, triboelectric surface area, extension length and magnetic stiffness were investigated and optimised. The voltage generation from piezoelectric and triboelectric mechanisms was determined individually to understand the effect of each design factor on the mechanisms. An output power of 659 µW at 180 kΩ at 44 Hz was obtained from the optimised MT-HPTEH with a theoretical–experimental discrepancy of less than 10%. The added magnetically-tunable feature enabled the harvester to work at the desired frequency range with an open circuit voltage between 7.800 and 20.314 V and a frequency range from 38 to 54 Hz. This MT-HPTEH can power at least six wireless sensor networks and can be used for low power applications such as RFID tags. Future work may include designing of energy-saving and sustainable harvester.

Description Fine line screen printing for solar cell metallization is one of the most critical steps in the entire production chain of solar cells, facing the challenge of providing a conductive grid with a minimum amount of resource consumption at an ever increasing demand for higher production speeds. The continuous effort of the industrial and scientific community has led to tremendous progress over the last 20 years, demonstrating an average reduction rate for the finger width of approximately 7 µm per year with the latest highlight of achieving widths of 19 µm. However, further reductions will become a major challenge because commonly used metal pastes are not able to penetrate arbitrary small screen opening structures. Therefore, this study introduces the novel dimensionless parameter screen utility index SUI which quantifies the expected printability of any 2-dimensional screen architecture in reference to a given paste. Further, we present a full theoretical derivation of the SUI, a correlation to experimental results and an in-depth simulation over a broad range of screen manufacturing parameters. The analysis of the SUI predicts the point when commonly used wire materials will fail to provide sufficient meshes for future solar cell metallization tasks. Therefore, novel wire materials (e.g. the use of carbon nanotubes) with very high ultimate tensile strengths are discussed and suggested in order to fulfill the SUI requirements for printing contact fingers with widths below 10 µm. We further analyze economic aspects of design choices for screen angles by presenting an analytical solution for the calculation of mesh cutting losses in industrial screen production. Finally, we combine all aspects by presenting a generalized approach for designing a 2-dimensional screen architecture which fulfills the task of printing at a desired finger width.

Description We report the first observation of room temperature spontaneous electric polarization in an electronic ferroelectric material, a YbFe2O4 single crystal. The observation was based on second harmonic generation (SHG), a nonlinear optical process. Tensor analysis of the SHG signal revealed that this material has a polar charge superstructure with Cm symmetry. This result settles the long-term discussion on the uncertainty about electronic ferroelectric properties, including the charge order structure. We present a complete picture of the polar charge ordering of this material via consistent results from two different characterization methods. The SHG signal shows the same temperature dependence as the superlattice signal observed in neutron diffraction experiments. These results prove ferroelectric coupling to electron ordering in YbFe2O4, which results in electronic ferroelectricity which is enabled by the real space ordering of iron cations with different valences. The existence of electronic ferroelectricity holds promise for future electronics technologies where devices run a thousand times faster than frequency of the present CPU (a few gigahertz) embedded in smartphones, etc.

Description Copper oxide films hold substantial promise as anti-stiction coatings in micro-electromechanical (MEMS) devices and with shrinking dimensions on the nanometre scale on nano electromechanical (NEMS) devices. The Hamaker constant will play a very significant role in understanding stiction and tribology in these devices. We used an approximate but sufficiently accurate form of the Lifshitz theory using the multiple oscillator model to calculate the Hamakers constant of symmetric copper oxide thin films based on experimentally obtained dielectric data in the wavelength range 190-850 nm using spectroscopic ellipsometry. We also used the Tabor–Winterton approximation (TWA) and Surface energy measurements to determine the Hamaker constant. There was better agreement in the Hamaker constant values obtained by the limited Lifshitz theory and TWA approach than with the Surface energy approach. The difference is explained through the influence of surface roughness on the surface energy using extensions of the stochastic KPZ growth model and the Family-Vicsek scaling relation and rigorous treatment of the Cassie-Baxter and Wenzel models as optimisations of a surface free energy functional linking roughness and surface tension. The dominance of the Cu2O phase in the films and of the London dispersion force on the surface of the films was previously confirmed by FTIR Cu(I)–O vibrational mode observation and XPS Cu 2p3/2 binding energy peak and its fitted satellites. The use of the limited Lifshitz theory and ellipsometry data would seem to provide a suitable best first approximation for determining the Hamaker constant of predominantly dispersive anti-stiction coatings in technologically important MEMS/NEMS devices.

Description Mitochondrial fusion/fission dynamics plays a fundamental role in neuroprotection; however, there is still a severe lack of therapeutic targets for this biological process. Here, we found that the naturally derived small molecule echinacoside (ECH) significantly promotes mitochondrial fusion progression. ECH selectively binds to the previously uncharacterized casein kinase 2 (CK2) α′ subunit (CK2α′) as a direct cellular target, and genetic knockdown of CK2α′ abolishes ECH-mediated mitochondrial fusion. Mechanistically, ECH allosterically regulates CK2α′ conformation to recruit basic transcription factor 3 (BTF3) to form a binary protein complex. Then, the CK2α′/BTF3 complex facilitates β-catenin nuclear translocation to activate TCF/LEF transcription factors and stimulate transcription of the mitochondrial fusion gene Mfn2. Strikingly, in a mouse middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model, ECH administration was found to significantly improve cerebral injuries and behavioral deficits by enhancing Mfn2 expression in wild-type but not CK2α′+/− mice. Taken together, our findings reveal, for the first time, that CK2 is essential for promoting mitochondrial fusion in a Wnt/β-catenin-dependent manner and suggest that pharmacologically targeting CK2 is a promising therapeutic strategy for ischemic stroke.
