Identification of microalgae cultured in Bold’s Basal medium from freshwater samples, from a high-rise city | Scientific Reports
Description
This study aimed at exploring microalgal heterogeneity from fresh water samples collected from inland water bodies in the heavily built city of Singapore. Culturable pure isolates (n = 94) were subject to an in-house microalgal DNA extraction method and LSU rDNA sequencing. Isolates were analysed for their predominance and distribution. A total of 17 different algal genera were identified (H = 2.8, EH = 0.6), of which Scenedesmus spp. and Chlorella spp. constituted 27.5% and 21.3% of isolates respectively, followed by Micractinium spp. (18.8%) and Chlamydomonas spp. (12.5%). We also report 16 new microalgal strains from this region. The data is important from an ecological and biotechnological perspective.#Hardware & Devices;#Gadgets

Evaluation of the QUANTUM BLUE sCAL rapid test as a point of care tool to identify patients with peritonsillar abscess | Scientific Reports
Description
S100A8/A9 (Calprotectin) serves as a biomarker for various inflammatory diseases, such as for peritonsillar abscess (PTA). Recently, the PTA score was developed for reliable PTA identification. It uses a combination of characteristic clinical symptoms and elevated calprotectin levels in serum and saliva to determine this score. Although well-established point-of-care tests (POCT) to determine serum or faecal calprotectin levels exist, a reliable and rapid tool to analyse salivary calprotectin has not yet been described. In this study, we analysed the potential of the QUANTUM BLUE sCAL Test (QBT, BÜHLMANN Laboratories AG, Switzerland) to determine S100A8/A9 levels during outpatient management. These QBT measurements are combined with other clinical factors to determine the PTA score. Significantly higher calprotectin levels were determined by QBT in patients with PTA compared to healthy controls. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for the QBT revealed cut-off values of 2940 ng/ml (sensitivity = 0.88, specificity = 0.78) in serum and 5310 ng/ml (sensitivity = 0.80, specificity = 0.50) in saliva. By adding the QBT results to determine PTA values, a ROC analysis provided a statistical cut-off score of 2.5 points to identify the existence of a PTA with a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 89.3%. The QUANTUM BLUE sCAL Test (QBT) is an appropriate POCT to determine serum and salivary calprotectin levels. Thus, PTA scores can be determined within a short time frame by applying the QBT during outpatient management.#Hardware & Devices

Long lifetime of bialkali photocathodes operating in high gradient superconducting radio frequency gun | Scientific Reports
Description
High brightness, high charge electron beams are critical for a number of advanced accelerator applications. The initial emittance of the electron beam, which is determined by the mean transverse energy (MTE) and laser spot size, is one of the most important parameters determining the beam quality. The bialkali photocathodes illuminated by a visible laser have the advantages of high quantum efficiency (QE) and low MTE. Furthermore, Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) guns can operate in the continuous wave (CW) mode at high accelerating gradients, e.g. with significant reduction of the laser spot size at the photocathode. Combining the bialkali photocathode with the SRF gun enables generation of high charge, high brightness, and possibly high average current electron beams. However, integrating the high QE semiconductor photocathode into the SRF guns has been challenging. In this article, we report on the development of bialkali photocathodes for successful operation in the SRF gun with months-long lifetime while delivering CW beams with nano-coulomb charge per bunch. This achievement opens a new era for high charge, high brightness CW electron beams.#Hardware & Devices

Observation of direction instability in a fiber ring laser | Scientific Reports
Description
We report on the observation of a new phenomenon occurring in a fiber ring laser. This phenomenon is about the transition from an initially bidirectional emission of a reciprocal fiber ring laser to a unidirectional emission at a certain pump power threshold. In addition, the final direction is not predefined but appears to be randomly chosen every time the threshold is exceeded. Therefore, we term this new phenomenon direction instability. Furthermore, we provide a first discussion of how the instability threshold is influenced by the length and the loss of the cavity. We show that the threshold follows a power times length scaling, indicating a nonlinear origin.#Hardware & Devices;#Laser

The performance limits of hexagonal boron nitride as an insulator for scaled CMOS devices based on two-dimensional materials | Nature Electronics
Description
Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) logic circuits at their ultimate scaling limits place extreme demands on the properties of all materials involved. The requirements for semiconductors are well explored and could possibly be satisfied by a number of layered two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides or black phosphorus. The requirements for gate insulators are arguably even more challenging. At present, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is the most common 2D insulator and is widely considered to be the most promising gate insulator in 2D material-based transistors. Here we assess the material parameters and performance limits of hBN. We compare experimental and theoretical tunnel currents through ultrathin layers (equivalent oxide thickness of less than 1 nm) of hBN and other 2D gate insulators, including the ideal case of defect-free hBN. Though its properties make hBN a candidate for many applications in 2D nanoelectronics, excessive leakage currents lead us to conclude that hBN is unlikely to be suitable for use as a gate insulator in ultrascaled CMOS devices. This Perspective assesses the performance limits of hexagonal boron nitride when used as a gate insulator in complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) devices based on two-dimensional materials, concluding that due to excessive leakage currents, the material is unlikely to be suitable for use in ultrascaled CMOS devices.#Hardware & Devices

Volume-based algorithm of lung dose optimization in novel dynamic arc radiotherapy for esophageal cancer | Scientific Reports
Description
This study aims to develop a volume-based algorithm (VBA) that can rapidly optimize rotating gantry arc angles and predict the lung V5 preceding the treatment planning. This phantom study was performed in the dynamic arc therapy planning systems for an esophageal cancer model. The angle of rotation of the gantry around the isocenter as defined as arc angle (θA), ranging from 360° to 80° with an interval of 20°, resulting in 15 different θA of treatment plans. The corresponding predicted lung V5 was calculated by the VBA, the mean lung dose, lung V5, lung V20, mean heart dose, heart V30, the spinal cord maximum dose and conformity index were assessed from dose–volume histogram in the treatment plan. Correlations between the predicted lung V5 and the dosimetric indices were evaluated using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The results showed that the predicted lung V5 and the lung V5 in the treatment plan were positively correlated (r = 0.996, p < 0.001). As the θA decreased, lung V5, lung V20, and the mean lung dose decreased while the mean heart dose, V30 and the spinal cord maximum dose increased. The V20 and the mean lung dose also showed high correlations with the predicted lung V5 (r = 0.974, 0.999, p < 0.001). This study successfully developed an efficient VBA to rapidly calculate the θA to predict the lung V5 and reduce the lung dose, with potentials to improve the current clinical practice of dynamic arc radiotherapy.#Hardware & Devices;#Gadgets

Improved pentamethine cyanine nanosensors for optoacoustic imaging of pancreatic cancer | Scientific Reports
Description
Optoacoustic imaging is a new biomedical imaging technology with clear benefits over traditional optical imaging and ultrasound. While the imaging technology has improved since its initial development, the creation of dedicated contrast agents for optoacoustic imaging has been stagnant. Current exploration of contrast agents has been limited to standard commercial dyes that have already been established in optical imaging applications. While some of these compounds have demonstrated utility in optoacoustic imaging, they are far from optimal and there is a need for contrast agents with tailored optoacoustic properties. The synthesis, encapsulation within tumor targeting silica nanoparticles and applications in in vivo tumor imaging of optoacoustic contrast agents are reported.#Hardware & Devices

The major limitations of the Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ superconductor are weak flux pinning capability and weak inter-grains coupling that lead to a low critical current density and low critical magnetic field which impedes the suppleness of this material towards practical applications. The addition of nanoscales impurities can create artificial pining centers that may improve flux pinning capability and intergranular coupling. In this work, the influences of ZnO nanoparticles on the superconducting parameters and pseudogap properties of the Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ superconductor are investigated using fluctuation induced conductivity analyses. Results demonstrate that the ZnO nanoparticles addition improves the formation of the Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ phase significantly. Various superconducting parameters include coherence length along c-axis (ξc(0)), penetration depth (λpd(0)), Fermi velocity (vF), Fermi energy (EF), lower and upper critical magnetic fields (Bc1(0) and Bc2(0) respectively) and critical current density (Jc(0)), are estimated for samples with different amounts of ZnO nanoparticles. It is found that the values of the Bc1(0), Bc2(0), and Jc(0) are improved significantly in the 0.2 wt% ZnO added sample in comparison to the ZnO-free sample. The magnitude and temperature dependence of the pseudogap Δ*(T) is calculated using the local pairs model. The obtained values of Tpair, the temperature at which local pairs are transformed from strongly coupled bosons into the fluctuating Cooper pairs, increases as the added ZnO nanoparticles concentration enhances up to 0.2 wt%. Also, the estimated values for the superconducting gap at T = 0 K (Δ(0)) are decreased from about 26 meV in ZnO-free sample to about 22 meV in 0.2 wt% ZnO added sample and then increases for higher values of additive.#Hardware & Devices

Association between fluoroquinolone resistance and MRSA genotype in Alexandria, Egypt | Scientific Reports
Description
Antimicrobial stewardship isn’t strictly observed in most Egyptian hospitals, raising antibiotic resistance. Epidemiology of Egyptian MRSA isolates, or associations with resistance to other antibiotics remain largely unknown. We identified MRSA genotypes in Alexandria Main University Hospital (AMUH) and investigated rates of moxifloxacin resistance, an alternative MRSA treatment, among different genotypes. Antibiotic susceptibility of 72 MRSA clinical isolates collected in 2015 from AMUH was determined by disc diffusion and broth microdilution. spa- and Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing were performed; with multi-locus sequence typing conducted on isolates representing major genotypes. Resistance to moxifloxacin, levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were 69%, 78% and 96%, respectively. spa type t037 (57%) was commonest, followed by t127 (12.5%), t267 (8%) and t688 (6%). SCCmec III predominated (57%), all of these were moxifloxacin resistant and 97.6% t037 (ST241). SCCmec IV, IV E and V represented 15%, 7% and 11% of the isolates, respectively, 79% of these were moxifloxacin susceptible and of different spa types. t127 (ST-1) was associated with SCCmec V in 56% of the isolates, mostly moxifloxacin susceptible. Moxifloxacin resistance was high, most resistant isolates belonged to t037 and SCCmec III, suggesting local dissemination and antibiotic pressure. We recommend caution in treating MRSA infections with moxifloxacin.#Hardware & Devices;#Artificial intelligence

Berry curvature origin of the thickness-dependent anomalous Hall effect in a ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal | npj Quantum Materials
Description
Magnetic Weyl semimetals with spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry exhibit a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect originating from the Berry curvature. To employ this large Hall current for room temperature topo-spintronics applications, it is necessary to fabricate these materials as thin or ultrathin films. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that Weyl semimetal Co2MnGa thin films (20–50 nm) show a large anomalous Hall angle ~11.4% at low temperature and ~9.7% at room temperature, which can be ascribed to the non-trivial topology of the band structure with large intrinsic Berry curvature. However, the anomalous Hall angle decreases significantly with thicknesses below 20 nm, which band structure calculations confirm is due to the reduction of the majority spin contribution to the Berry curvature. Our results suggest that Co2MnGa is an excellent material to realize room temperature topo-spintronics applications; however, the significant thickness dependence of the Berry curvature has important implications for thin-film device design.#Hardware & Devices

Code interoperability extends the scope of quantum simulations | npj Computational Materials
Description
The functionality of many materials is critically dependent on the integration of dissimilar components and on the interfaces that arise between them. The description of such heterogeneous components requires the development and deployment of first principles methods, coupled to appropriate dynamical descriptions of matter and advanced sampling techniques, in order to capture all the relevant length and time scales of importance to the materials’ performance. It is thus essential to build simple, streamlined computational schemes for the prediction and design of multiple properties of broad classes of materials, by developing interoperable codes which can be efficiently coupled to each other to perform complex tasks. We discuss the use of interoperable codes to simulate the structural and spectroscopic characterization of materials, including chemical reactions for catalysis, the description of defects for quantum information science, and heat and charge transport.#Hardware & Devices

Ultra-sensitive nanometric flat laser prints for binocular stereoscopic image | Nature Communications
Description
Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with tantalizing layer-dependent electronic and optical properties have emerged as a paradigm for integrated flat opto-electronic devices, but their widespread applications are hampered by challenges in deterministic fabrication with demanded shapes and thicknesses, as well as light field manipulation in such atomic-thick layers with negligible thicknesses compared to the wavelength. Here we demonstrate ultra-sensitive light field manipulation in full visible ranges based on MoS2 laser prints exfoliated with nanometric precisions. The nontrivial interfacial phase shifts stemming from the unique dispersion of MoS2 layers integrated on the metallic substrate empower an ultra-sensitive resonance manipulation up to 13.95 nm per MoS2 layer across the entire visible bands, which is up to one-order-of-magnitude larger than their counterparts. The interlayer van der Waals interactions and the anisotropic thermal conductivity of layered MoS2 films endow a laser exfoliation method for on-demand patterning MoS2 with atomic thickness precision and subwavelength feature sizes. With this, nanometric flat color prints and further amplitude-modulated diffractive components for binocular stereoscopic images can be realized in a facile and lithography-free fashion. Our results with demonstrated practicality unlock the potentials of, and pave the way for, widespread applications of emerging 2D flat optics. The authors demonstrate fidelity colour prints and binocular stereoscopic images in multilayer MoS2 integrated on an Au substrate, showing nanometric layer sensitivity in the Fabry-Perot resonance changed by a facile laser recipe.#Hardware & Devices;#Laser

Semiconductor qubits in practice | Nature Reviews Physics
Description
In the past decade, semiconducting qubits have made great strides in overcoming decoherence, improving the prospects for scalability and have become one of the leading contenders for the development of large-scale quantum circuits. In this Review, we describe the current state of the art in semiconductor charge and spin qubits based on gate-controlled semiconductor quantum dots, shallow dopants and colour centres in wide-bandgap materials. We frame the relative strengths of the different semiconductor qubit implementations in the context of applications such as quantum simulation, computing, sensing and networks. By highlighting the status and future perspectives of the basic types of semiconductor qubits, this Review aims to serve as a technical introduction for non-specialists and a forward-looking reference for scientists intending to work in this field. Semiconductor qubits are expected to have diverse future quantum applications. This Review discusses semiconductor qubit implementations from the perspective of an ecosystem of applications, such as quantum simulation, sensing, computation and communication. #Hardware & Devices

Permeable superelastic liquid-metal fibre mat enables biocompatible and monolithic stretchable electronics | Nature Materials
Description
Stretchable electronics find widespread uses in a variety of applications such as wearable electronics, on-skin electronics, soft robotics and bioelectronics. Stretchable electronic devices conventionally built with elastomeric thin films show a lack of permeability, which not only impedes wearing comfort and creates skin inflammation over long-term wearing but also limits the design form factors of device integration in the vertical direction. Here, we report a stretchable conductor that is fabricated by simply coating or printing liquid metal onto an electrospun elastomeric fibre mat. We call this stretchable conductor a liquid-metal fibre mat. Liquid metal hanging among the elastomeric fibres self-organizes into a laterally mesh-like and vertically buckled structure, which offers simultaneously high permeability, stretchability, conductivity and electrical stability. Furthermore, the liquid-metal fibre mat shows good biocompatibility and smart adaptiveness to omnidirectional stretching over 1,800% strain. We demonstrate the use of a liquid-metal fibre mat as a building block to realize highly permeable, multifunctional monolithic stretchable electronics. Coating of liquid metals on electrospun elastomeric fibre mats leads to the realization of conducting buckled meshes that can be stretched up to 1,800% strain while preserving both stable electrical properties and permeability to air and moisture.#Hardware & Devices

Perineuronal nets are under the control of type-5 metabotropic glutamate receptors in the developing somatosensory cortex | Translational Psychiatry
Description
mGlu5 metabotropic glutamate receptors are highly functional in the early postnatal life, and regulate developmental plasticity of parvalbumin-positive (PV+) interneurons in the cerebral cortex. PV+ cells are enwrapped by perineuronal nets (PNNs) at the closure of critical windows of cortical plasticity. Changes in PNNs have been associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. We found that the number of Wisteria Fluoribunda Agglutinin (WFA)+ PNNs and the density of WFA+/PV+ cells were largely increased in the somatosensory cortex of mGlu5−/− mice at PND16. An increased WFA+ PNN density was also observed after pharmacological blockade of mGlu5 receptors in the first two postnatal weeks. The number of WFA+ PNNs in mGlu5−/− mice was close to a plateau at PND16, whereas continued to increase in wild-type mice, and there was no difference between the two genotypes at PND21 and PND60. mGlu5−/− mice at PND16 showed increases in the transcripts of genes involved in PNN formation and a reduced expression and activity of type-9 matrix metalloproteinase in the somatosensory cortex suggesting that mGlu5 receptors control both PNN formation and degradation. Finally, unilateral whisker stimulation from PND9 to PND16 enhanced WFA+ PNN density in the contralateral somatosensory cortex only in mGlu5+/+ mice, whereas whisker trimming from PND9 to PND16 reduced WFA+ PNN density exclusively in mGlu5−/− mice, suggesting that mGlu5 receptors shape the PNN response to sensory experience. These findings disclose a novel undescribed mechanism of PNN regulation, and lay the groundwork for the study of mGlu5 receptors and PNNs in neurodevelopmental disorders.#Hardware & Devices
