A method to analyze the influence of mechanical strain on dermal collagen morphologies | Scientific Reports
Description
Collagen fibers and their orientation play a major role in the mechanical behavior of soft biological tissue such as skin. Here, we present a proof-of-principle study correlating mechanical properties with collagen fiber network morphologies. A dedicated multiphoton stretching device allows for mechanical deformations in combination with a simultaneous analysis of its collagen fiber network by second harmonic generation imaging (SHG). The recently introduced Fiber Image Network Evaluation (FINE) algorithm is used to obtain detailed information about the morphology with regard to fiber families in collagen network images. To demonstrate the potential of our method, we investigate an isotropic and an anisotropic ex-vivo dorsal pig skin sample under quasi-static cyclic stretching and relaxation sequences. Families of collagen fibers are found to form a partially aligned collagen network under strain. We find that the relative force uptake is accomplished in two steps. Firstly, fibers align within their fiber families and, secondly, fiber families orient in the direction of force. The maximum alignment of the collagen fiber network is found to be determined by the largest strain. Isotropic and anisotropic samples reveal a different micro structural behavior under repeated deformation leading to a similar force uptake after two stretching cycles. Our method correlates mechanical properties with morphologies in collagen fiber networks.#Sport & Camping

Siland a R package for estimating the spatial influence of landscape | Scientific Reports
Description
The spatial distributions of populations are both influenced by local variables and by characteristics of surrounding landscapes. Understanding how landscape features spatially structure the frequency of a trait in a population, the abundance of a species or the species’ richness remains difficult specially because the spatial scale effects of the landscape variables are unknown. Various methods have been proposed but their results are not easily comparable. Here, we introduce “siland”, a general method for analyzing the effect of landscape features. Based on a sequential procedure of maximum likelihood estimation, it simultaneously estimates the spatial scales and intensities of landscape variable effects. It does not require any information about the scale of effect. It integrates two landscape effects models: one is based on focal sample site (Bsiland, b for buffer) and one is distance weighted using Spatial Influence Function (Fsiland, f for function). We implemented “siland” in the adaptable and user-friendly R eponym package. It performs landscape analysis on georeferenced point observations (described in a Geographic Information System shapefile format) and allows for effects tests, effects maps and models comparison. We illustrated its use on a real dataset by the study of a crop pest (codling moth densities).#Sport & Camping

Influence of Sr deficiency on structural and electrical properties of SrTiO 3 thin films grown by metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy | Scientific Reports
Description
Homoepitaxial growth of SrTiO3 thin films on 0.5 wt% niobium doped SrTiO3 (100) substrates with high structural perfection was developed using liquid-delivery spin metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). Exploiting the advantage of adjusting the partial pressures of the individual constituents independently, we tuned the Sr/Ti ratio of the gas phase for realizing, stoichiometric, as well as Sr deficient layers. Quantitative energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope confirm Sr deficiency of up to 20% in nominally off-stoichiometrically grown films. Our MOVPE process allows to grow such layers in phase pure state and without extended defect formation. Indications for oxygen deficiency could not be identified. Sr deficient layers exhibit an increased permittivity of ɛr = 202 and a larger vertical lattice parameter. Current–voltage characteristics (IVCs) of metal–oxide–semiconductor (Pt/SrTiO3/SrTiO3:Nb) structures reveal that Sr deficient SrTiO3 films show an intrinsic resistive switching with on–off ratios of three orders of magnitude at RT and seven orders of magnitude at 10 K. There is strong evidence that a large deviation from stoichiometry pronounces the resistive switching behavior. IVCs conducted at 10 K indicate a defect-based mechanism instead of mass transport by ion diffusion. This is supported by in-situ STEM investigations that show filaments to form at significant higher voltages than those were resistive switching is observed in our samples.#Sport & Camping
