Description Topological magnetic structure possesses topological stability characteristics that make it robust against disturbances which are a big advantage for data processing or storage devices of spintronics; nonetheless, such characteristics have been rarely clarified. This paper focused on the formation of chiral soliton lattice (CSL), a one-dimensional topological magnetic structure, and provides a discussion of its topological stability and influence of thermal fluctuation. Herein, CSL responses against change of temperature and applied magnetic field were investigated via small-angle resonant soft X-ray scattering in chromium niobium sulfide ( $$hbox {CrNb}_3hbox {S}_6$$ ). CSL transformation relative to the applied magnetic field demonstrated a clear agreement with the theoretical prediction of the sine-Gordon model. Further, there were apparent differences in the process of chiral soliton creation and annihilation, discussed from the viewpoint of competing between thermal fluctuation and the topological metastability.

Description Colloidal particles dispersed in nematic liquid crystals are aligned along the orientation that minimizes the elastic free energy. Through applying an electric field to a nematic colloidal system, the orientation of the director can change. Consequently, colloidal particles realign to minimize the total free energy, which is the sum of the elastic and electric free energies. Herein, we demonstrate that if the preferred rotation directions given by the electric and elastic free energies are different during realignment, the rotation direction of the particle can be controlled by how we apply the electric field. When the strength of the electric field gradually increases, the particles rotate in the same direction as the rotation of the director. However, when a sufficiently high electric field is suddenly applied, the particles rotate in the opposite direction. In this study, we analyzed the effect of free energy on the bidirectional rotation behavior of the particles using a theoretical model. This study provides an effective approach to control the rotational behavior of colloidal particles over a wide-angle range between two orientational local minima.

Description We demonstrate photoacoustic wave propagation with a plane wavefront in liquid water using a terahertz (THz) laser pulse. The THz light can effectively generate the photoacoustic wave in water because of strong absorption via a stretching vibration mode of the hydrogen bonding network. The excitation of a large-area water surface irradiated by loosely focused THz light produces a plane photoacoustic wave. This is in contrast with conventional methods using absorbers or plasma generation using near-infrared laser light. The photoacoustic wave generation and plane wave propagation are observed using a system with a THz free-electron laser and shadowgraph imaging. The plane photoacoustic wave is generated by incident THz light with a small radiant exposure of < 1 mJ/cm2 and delivered 600 times deeper than the penetration depth of THz light for water. The THz-light-induced plane photoacoustic wave offers great advantages to non-invasive operations for industrial and biological applications as demonstrated in our previous report (Yamazaki et al. in Sci Rep 10:9008, 2020).
