A Chinese government policy allowing all couples to have two children led to an additional 5.4 million births in the first 18 months after it took effect. China’s universal two-child policy, announced in October 2015, was designed to boost the country’s stagnating population growth. It targeted 90 million women of reproductive age who already had at least one child – 60 per cent of these women were older than 35. Susan Hellerstein at Harvard University and her colleagues looked at data from two national databases between January 2014 and December 2017, totalling 67.8 million births. The databases covered 28 of China’s 31 mainland provinces. They measured birth rates from July 2016 to December 2017, the first 18 months after the policy came into effect. The team compared these to baseline birth rates up to the end of June 2016, nine months after the October 2015 announcement. In the 18-month period, there were 5.4 million additional births to women who already had one or more children. For the first time since the one-child policy, the number of births to women who had previously given birth exceeded that of first-time mothers, accounting for 55.5 per cent of deliveries. By creating a microdevice that mimics lung function on single-cell levels, researchers at Rutgers, Yale, and Johns Hopkins have learned more about asthmatic trigger response, leading to better treatment. Researchers at Rutgers and other institutions have discovered how muscle contraction (bronchospasm) in the airway, which cause breathing difficulty in people with asthma, occur by creating a microdevice that mimics the behavior of the human airways. The study, published in the July 2019 issue of the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering and previously online, could lead to new treatment strategies for respiratory diseases, said co-author Reynold Panettieri, director of the Rutgers Institute for Translational Medicine and Science. Bronchospasm can occur in both healthy people and those who suffer from serious respiratory diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Studying why the smooth muscle surrounding bronchial airways can suddenly contract and lead to difficulties in breathing is difficult due to the complexities of bronchospasm and the fact that the human respiratory system cannot be modeled in animal studies. To analyze the biochemical and mechanical signals that occur between cells during spasms, the researchers created a microdevice — a “bronchi on a chip” one-thousandth the size of a human hair — containing cells from healthy and asthmatic lungs that mimics the function of a lung on single-cell levels. When they triggered a simulated bronchospasm on the device, the researchers discovered that the initial contraction prompts the secretion of hormone-like compounds that either can induce an additional constriction or relax the spasm. In people with asthma, the smooth muscle surrounding the airways is more reactive and contracts more easily in response to stimuli such as allergens, leading to extended bronchial spasms, wheezing and shortness of breath. They also found that inducing a second asthmatic trigger during a bronchial spasm at a precise time will actually cause the smooth muscle to relax and stop the spasm. The treatments for bronchospasm have not changed in the past 50 years, Panettieri said, since they work for most — but not all — people. “The microdevice allowed us to drill down into how single cells interact with each other in relation to smooth muscle contraction in a variety of lung diseases,” said Panettieri. “Being able to study the mechanics on the single-cell level and view thousands of cells simultaneously can be an important screening tool for the development of new drugs for people with asthma who don’t respond to current treatment.” ### The study was led by Steven An, director of Bioengineering at Rutgers Institute for Translational Medicine and Science and professor of pharmacology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and researchers at the Yale University’s Yale Systems Biology Institute and Johns Hopkins University. Paper: “A microphysiological model of the bronchial airways reveals the interplay of mechanical and biochemical signals in bronchospasm,” was published in the July 2019 issue of the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering. DOI:10.1038/s41551-019-0366-7

Cannabidiol (CBD) oils and products have become increasingly popular with consumers as ways to find relief from aches and pains, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and other chronic issues. But are these products safe, and are they helpful? A review of the latest research, to be published in September in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, finds there’s a growing body of preclinical and clinical evidence to suggest that CBD oils may hold promise for treating conditions such as chronic pain and opioid addiction. But few clinical studies on the safety and efficacy of CBD have been reported, and more research involving humans is needed before health care providers can say definitely that they’re helpful and safe, according to Mayo Clinic researchers. “There are many intriguing findings in pre-clinical studies that suggest CBD and hemp oil have anti-inflammatory effects and may be helpful with improving sleep and anxiety,” says Brent Bauer, M.D., an internist and director of research for the Mayo Clinic Integrative Medicine program. “But trials in humans are still limited, so it is too early to be definitive about efficacy and safety.” Dr. Bauer says there’s reason for concern about a growing number of reports of liver injury in patients who have used CBD products. With greatly increasing patient interest in CBD and hemp oil products, it’s important that clinical research moves ahead to better understand their potential value and safety, he says. “Careful selection of a health care product is crucial, and though these products do not have Food and Drug Administration approval for therapeutic use, patients continue to ask for them and use them. Physicians need to become better informed about these products, and it’s important that human trials examine issues of efficacy and safety.”

The threat of explosive volcanic eruptions looms over many cities around the world. Earthquakes, another major geological hazard, are known to have some relationships with the occurrence of volcanic eruptions. Although they often precede volcanic events, the mechanisms of these relationships are not yet well understood. Mount Aso in Kyushu, Japan, is one of the largest active volcanoes in the world and has experienced major earthquakes and eruptions as recently as 2016. Researchers at Kyushu University’s International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER) have been investigating the relationships among these events to better understand what is happening under the surface and to help predict future disasters. In particular, for a new study published in Geophysical Research Letters, they investigated “very long period” (VLP) seismic waves, which can represent pressure changes in subsurface hydrothermal systems. “We analyzed continuous VLP seismicity data recorded from January 2015 to December 2016, a period that includes both large earthquakes and eruptions of Mount Aso,” explains lead author of the study Andri Hendriyana. “Using on this dataset, we developed a differential-time back-projection method to accurately locate VLP events, and detected over 18,000 reliable VLP events.” Using this method, two distinct clusters of these seismic events were identified in the subsurface below the caldera of Mount Aso. For most of the observation period, VLP activity was almost entirely confined to the eastern cluster. However, after the Kumamoto earthquakes on April 2016, VLP activity abruptly shifted to the western cluster for about five months. Then, in September 2016, one month before the largest eruption of Mount Aso during the study period, VLP events migrated back to the eastern cluster. After the large eruption on October 8, 2016, VLP seismicity stopped temporarily. Together, these observations show that VLP events are affected by the occurrence of earthquakes and are related to volcanic eruptions. VLP seismicity is considered to be directly related to pressure variations associated with magmatic activity. “We interpret the migration of VLP activity after the earthquakes as a response to permeability enhancement or to fractures opening because of extension associated with the Kumamoto earthquakes,” says senior author Takeshi Tsuji. He expects this method to be applied in further studies of Mount Aso as well as other volcanoes worldwide. “The information obtained from this new monitoring approach could reveal new details about the dynamic behavior within Aso and other volcanoes after earthquakes, and could provide important information for the prevention and mitigation of future disasters.” ### The article, “Migration of very long period seismicity at Aso volcano, Japan, associated with the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake,” was published in Geophysical Research Letters at DOI:10.1029/2019GL082645.

Cosmologists can’t agree on how fast the universe is expanding because the two different methods they use to find out give distinctly different results. Now a third method involving gravitational waves is looking more promising, and it could help break the deadlock. Gravitational waves are the minuscule ripples in space-time that were discovered in 2015 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, better known as LIGO. They are produced when gigantic objects like black holes or neutron stars smash together. … Read more: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2214225-gravitational-waves-could-settle-mystery-of-the-universes-expansion/#ixzz5xKyDqSl8

Using a special emulsion process, water is added to oil. When the water-to-oil ratio is 4 to 1, the oil spheres begin to deform and pack tightly against one another, resulting in a product that behaves like butter. Credit: Jason Koski, Cornell University Cornell University food scientists have created a new low-calorie ‘butter’ spread that consists mostly of water. A tablespoon of this low-calorie spread has 2.8 grams of fat and 25.2 calories. Butter, on the other hand, which is 84% fat and about 16% water, has about 11 grams of fat and nearly 100 calories. They figured out a new process to emulsify a large amount of water with minuscule drops of vegetable oil and milk fat to mimic butter, at approximately one-fourth the calories of real butter and without artificial stabilizers. “Imagine 80% water in 20% oil and we create something with the consistency of butter, with the mouthfeel of butter and creaminess of butter,” said food science professor and senior author Alireza Abbaspourrad. Emulsifying water and oil is nothing new, said Abbaspourrad, but by using high-internal phase emulsions (HIPE), “we keep adding water to that oil until the final composition is 80% water and 20% oil.”

This artist’s illustration depicts the exoplanet LHS 3844b, which is 1.3 times the mass of Earth and orbits an M dwarf star. The planet’s surface may be covered mostly in dark lava rock, with no apparent atmosphere, according to observations by NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech/R. Hurt (IPAC) A new study using data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope provides a rare glimpse of conditions on the surface of a rocky planet orbiting a star beyond the Sun. The study, published today in the journal Nature, shows that the planet’s surface may resemble those of Earth’s Moon or Mercury: The planet likely has little to no atmosphere and could be covered in the same cooled volcanic material found in the dark areas of the Moon’s surface, called mare. Discovered in 2018 by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Satellite Survey (TESS) mission, planet LHS 3844b is located 48.6 light-years from Earth and has a radius 1.3 times that of Earth. It orbits a small, cool type of star called an M dwarf — especially noteworthy because, as the most common and long-lived type of star in the Milky Way galaxy, M dwarfs may host a high percentage of the total number of planets in the galaxy. TESS found the planet via the transit method, which involves detecting when the observed light of a parent star dims because of a planet orbiting between the star and Earth. Detecting light coming directly from a planet’s surface — another method — is difficult because the star is so much brighter and drowns out the planet’s light. But during follow-up observations, Spitzer was able to detect light from the surface of LHS 3844b. The planet makes one full revolution around its parent star in just 11 hours. With such a tight orbit, LHS 3844b is most likely “tidally locked,” which is when one side of a planet permanently faces the star. The star-facing side, or dayside, is about 1,410 degrees Fahrenheit (770 degrees Celsius). Being extremely hot, the planet radiates a lot of infrared light, and Spitzer is an infrared telescope. The planet’s parent star is relatively cool (though still much hotter than the planet), making direct observation of LHS 3844b’s dayside possible. This observation marks the first time Spitzer data have been able to provide information about the atmosphere of a terrestrial world around an M dwarf.

A 2016 artist’s concept of the Europa Clipper spacecraft. The design is changing as the spacecraft is developed. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech An icy ocean world in our solar system that could tell us more about the potential for life on other worlds is coming into focus with confirmation of the Europa Clipper mission’s next phase. The decision allows the mission to progress to completion of final design, followed by the construction and testing of the entire spacecraft and science payload. “We are all excited about the decision that moves the Europa Clipper mission one key step closer to unlocking the mysteries of this ocean world,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “We are building upon the scientific insights received from the flagship Galileo and Cassini spacecraft and working to advance our understanding of our cosmic origin, and even life elsewhere.” The mission will conduct an in-depth exploration of Jupiter’s moon Europa and investigate whether the icy moon could harbor conditions suitable for life, honing our insights into astrobiology. To develop this mission in the most cost-effective fashion, NASA is targeting to have the Europa Clipper spacecraft complete and ready for launch as early as 2023. The agency baseline commitment, however, supports a launch readiness date by 2025. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, leads the development of the Europa Clipper mission in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory for the Science Mission Directorate. Europa Clipper is managed by the Planetary Missions Program Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Researchers have developed artificial ‘chameleon skin’ that changes color when exposed to light and could be used in applications such as active camouflage and large-scale dynamic displays. The material, developed by researchers from the University of Cambridge, is made of tiny particles of gold coated in a polymer shell, and then squeezed into microdroplets of water in oil. When exposed to heat or light, the particles stick together, changing the color of the material. The results are reported in the journal Advanced Optical Materials. In nature, animals such as chameleons and cuttlefish are able to change color thanks to chromatophores: skin cells with contractile fibers that move pigments around. The pigments are spread out to show their color, or squeezed together to make the cell clear. The artificial chromatophores developed by the Cambridge researchers are built on the same principle, but instead of contractile fibers, their color-changing abilities rely on light-powered nano-mechanisms, and the ‘cells’ are microscopic drops of water. When the material is heated above 32C, the nanoparticles store large amounts of elastic energy in a fraction of a second, as the polymer coatings expel all the water and collapse. This has the effect of forcing the nanoparticles to bind together into tight clusters. When the material is cooled, the polymers take on water and expand, and the gold nanoparticles are strongly and quickly pushed apart, like a spring. “Loading the nanoparticles into the microdroplets allows us to control the shape and size of the clusters, giving us dramatic color changes,” said Dr Andrew Salmon from Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory, the study’s co-first author. The geometry of the nanoparticles when they bind into clusters determines which color they appear as: when the nanoparticles are spread apart they are red and when they cluster together they are dark blue. However, the droplets of water also compress the particle clusters, causing them to shadow each other and make the clustered state nearly transparent. At the moment, the material developed by the Cambridge researchers is in a single layer, so is only able to change to a single color. However, different nanoparticle materials and shapes could be used in extra layers to make a fully dynamic material, like real chameleon skin. The researchers also observed that the artificial cells can ‘swim’ in simple ways, similar to the algae Volvox. Shining a light on one edge of the droplets causes the surface to peel towards the light, pushing it forward. Under stronger illumination, high pressure bubbles briefly form to push the droplets along a surface. “This work is a big advance in using nanoscale technology to do biomimicry,” said co-author Sean Cormier. “We’re now working to replicate this on roll-to-roll films so that we can make meters of color-changing sheets. Using structured light we also plan to use the light-triggered swimming to ‘herd’ droplets. It will be really exciting to see what collective behaviors are generated.” The research was funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

On the beach in the Netherlands in 2016. Oddly shaped rings. Is this the same effect we’re seeing? Here, a lot of different effects are at play. Credit: Simen Andreas Ådnøy Ellingsen, NTNU Researcher proves that boat wakes can be skewed. He solved a 127-year-old physics problem on paper and proved that off-centered boat wakes could exist. Five years later, practical experiments proved him right. “Seeing the pictures appear on the computer screen was the best day at work I’ve ever had,” says Simen Ådnøy Ellingsen, an associate professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s (NTNU) Department of Energy and Process Engineering. That was the day that PhD candidate Benjamin Keeler Smeltzer and master’s student Eirik Æsøy had shown in the lab that Ellingsen was right and sent him the photos from the experiment. Five years ago, Ellingsen had challenged accepted knowledge from 1887, armed with a pen and paper, and won. He solved a problem regarding the so-called Kelvin angle in boat wakes, which has been unchallenged for 127 years. The boat wake is the v-shaped pattern that a boat or canoe makes when moving through the water. You’ve undoubtedly seen one at some point.

Through a blizzard of competing headlines about the moon landing, the civil rights movement and the war in Vietnam, few people noticed. But writing in New Scientist on 28 August 1969, technology journalist Rex Malik called the idea a historic move comparable to the moon … Read more: https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg24332440-200-how-the-us-almost-introduced-a-universal-basic-income-50-years-ago/#ixzz5xJApK1Fi

Earth has been habitable for 4.3 billion years, and the earliest rock record indicates the presence of a microbial biosphere by at least 3.4 billion years ago—and disputably earlier. Possible traces of life can be morphological or chemical but abiotic processes that mimic or alter them, or subsequent contamination, may challenge their interpretation. Advances in micro- and nanoscale analyses, as well as experimental approaches, are improving the characterization of these biosignatures and constraining abiotic processes, when combined with the geological context. Reassessing the evidence of early life is challenging, but essential and timely in the quest to understand the origin and evolution of life, both on Earth and beyond.

It might be over. According to some reports, Spider-Man is no longer part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sources at Deadline claim that the partnership between Sony Pictures, which owns the film rights to Spider-Man and all associated characters, and Marvel Studios, which controls the rest of the MCU, has been terminated, effectively ending Peter Parker’s time as a member of both the Avengers and Marvel’s shared cinematic superhero universe. The culprit, as always, is money. Disney was rumored to be pushing for a new deal that would have given the company a co-financing stake in future Spider-Man films. Sony refused to agree to the terms, effectively ending the deal that allowed Spider-Man to join Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and other heroes on the silver screen.

Situated at over 5,000 meters above sea level in the Himalayan Mountains, Roopkund Lake is home to the scattered skeletal remains of several hundred individuals of unknown origin. We report genome-wide ancient DNA for 38 skeletons from Roopkund Lake, and find that they cluster into three distinct groups. A group of 23 individuals have ancestry that falls within the range of variation of present-day South Asians. A further 14 have ancestry typical of the eastern Mediterranean. We also identify one individual with Southeast Asian-related ancestry. Radiocarbon dating indicates that these remains were not deposited simultaneously. Instead, all of the individuals with South Asian-related ancestry date to ~800 CE (but with evidence of being deposited in more than one event), while all other individuals date to ~1800 CE. These differences are also reflected in stable isotope measurements, which reveal a distinct dietary profile for the two main groups.

We’re just seven days from the release of World of Warcraft Classic, and the dev team has kick-started the grand countdown with a lengthy Reddit AMA. Eight staffers, from the Executive Producer to the Principle Software Engineer, lined up to answer over 2,000 questions from nostalgia-hungry Redditors and there’s a lot to go through. As expected, plenty of questions regarding log-in times came in early, to which fans were reassured that new servers can and will be added if necessary. On the subject of how else they could combat potential overcrowding, the game’s Lead Software Engineer stated: “…while [realm caps and queues] are tools we have at our disposal, we don’t want to rely on them exclusively, because they keep people from playing the game.”

QUANTUM mechanics is often called a theory of the very small. In reality, it explains phenomena on a vast range of scales – from elementary particles and their interactions, through atoms and molecules, all the way to neutron stars and the supernovae that spawn them. So far, essentially all its predictions have been confirmed by experiments. It is the most successful theory of material reality we have ever had. So why have so many physicists, from Albert Einstein onwards, taken the view that quantum theory is wrong? The reasons lie in its mysterious nature, in the phenomena it doesn’t explain and the answers it doesn’t give. That is reason enough to seek what might lie beyond it. I believe we already have the outline of what this deeper answer looks like. We are only at the start of this work, but by digging down into the fundamental principles that underlie reality, and weeding out what is right and what is wrong about our current ideas, we can see glimpses of a truly unifying picture of physics. It comes at a price: to go beyond quantum, we must totally upend long-held ideas of how the universe hangs together. It is easy to state the basic problem of quantum mechanics as a theory of reality: it doesn’t tell us what is happening in reality. It has two different laws to describe how things and events evolve. The first applies most of the time, and describes quantum objects as wave-like entities embodied in a mathematical construction known as a wave function. These objects … Read more: https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg24332440-600-quantum-weirdness-isnt-real-weve-just-got-space-and-time-all-wrong/#ixzz5xJQwwwTy

People who have high blood pressure in their 40s seem to have smaller brains by the time they are 70. The findings provide more evidence that looking after your health can help prevent dementia, says Jonathan Schott at University College London, who led the study. Around 30 per cent of dementia cases are thought to be preventable, says Schott. To find out how important blood pressure might be, his team turned to a group of individuals who have been part of a research project since they were born in 1946. The volunteers had their blood pressure measured in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. In the latest study, Schott’s team took brain scans and assessed the cognition of 502 members of the group, who were by that time aged between 69 and 71. The team found that people who had a higher diastolic blood pressure aged 43 were more likely to have smaller brains by the time they were around 70. A brain region vital for memory, called the hippocampus, seemed especially affected – individuals with a greater increase in systolic blood pressure between the ages of 36 and 43 had smaller hippocampi around 70. “It looks like one’s blood pressure is influencing one’s brain health 40 years later,” says Schott. Because the results only show a correlation, the team can’t say for sure that high blood pressure was responsible for brain shrinkage. But we do know that high blood pressure is bad for the brain, and can lead to blood vessel damage. Without a healthy blood supply, brain tissue can die. Read more: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2213955-high-blood-pressure-in-your-40s-linked-to-smaller-brain-size-at-70/#ixzz5xJR8vQjq
